My name is Melissa, ( AKA Barngodess ), and Tom’s wife. I am owner/administrator , and the person you can hold responsible for starting this board......

,
While I love snapping photos, I am not as technical minded as others on this board..... I shoot with a P&S HP Photosmart 935. I want to capture the moment..... The fleeting moments that will not happen ever again, the very same way.
I took Photography in High School. That is where I learned dark room techniques, developing film and pictures. I had a keen interest but never developed it any further. In later years after marriage and when Tom got more involved we had a darkroom and I developed the film , while he developed the actual prints. Our interests went hand in hand.
Present day, I am always up to a challenge. My life has not been immersed in photography, it has been spent trying to make a difference in peoples and animals lives.
I was a Firefighter in Ohio, for 9 years. The second woman in the department at that time.... hence, the challenge..... both physically and emotional. My picture was in the newspaper more than once, being on the scene of local fires or accidents.
I was an elected prosecuting Animal Control Officer for 2 years in Vermont, and helped pen the dog ordinance in that community. I also volunteered at the local animal shelter. I worked many hours, helping to prosecute and bring awareness to animal cruelty in northern Vermont communities...... I just can’t help but stand up for Gods creatures.
Again, my picture was published on the front page of the Burlington Free Press........ I did the Penguin Plunge, which was in February, 2005, air tempurature was 17 degrees F. It was a fund raiser for the Special Olympics.
NO, my photographs have not been published..... just photos of me.
That’s about it for me, and that’s all besides my full time day job that I normally do, accept at the moment I’m unemployed after moving to Tennessee.

FUSION
Global Moderator..Black & White , HDR Photography

Ian Miller (aka Fusion), is a Freelance Photographer currently living and working in South East Asia, and his involvement, and exposure to photography stems back nearly some thirty Years. Ian also realizes that with his experience, and time in Photography, that you can't just rely on your past knowledge, the Digital Age, will not allow it, knowledge and experience is never ending.
His first camera, apart from his Dads old Brownie Box, was a Chinon CS with a 50mm f1.8 lens, no automation and a great cheap camera to learn the basics on. He quickly moved on to a Nikon F with a selection of Nikkor lenses bought second hand, mainly primes from 28mm to 300mm, no zooms at this point. This led to the Nikon F2 with a motor drive picked up whilst he was travelling in the USA, California (San Francisco if he remembers correctly) a real modern classic, he still has both these cameras and use them sometimes when film is requested.
His first 'real' digital camera was a Kodak DCS 520 ( Review) followed shortly after by a Kodak DCS 620 (review) both extremely expensive and ground breaking cameras in there day, obsolete now but still taking perfectly acceptable images and he can use all his MF Nikkor lenses with the 620 and retain metering.
His main camera is now the Canon 1D MkIV 16MP and he is very impressed with it. This is supported by a Canon 1D,1D Mk2 & 10D. He uses Canon & Sigma lenses (10-20 EX & 15-30 DG plus a Canon 24-105 IS f4 USM and 70-200 f2.8L USM) plus a Nikon D100 with a selection of Nikkor lenses.
Why CANON ?? Why NIKON ??
He has no particular preference between brand and finds that they all are much the same. He likes the smoothness of the Canon images and he admires there reliability under extremes. Nikon he finds the images more gritty and film like (especially the D100) and for some images this is what he likes and for this reason he runs the two systems in tandem. Nikkor glass in his opinion still unbeatable and he still uses a lot of his retained Nikkor A1s lenses, no AF but superb results.
He is currently based in Phnom Penh, Cambodia. He will be living almost exclusively in Phnom Penh City and using this as his base for futher freelance work and the exploration of the whole of SEA.

DOC
Moderator: Beginners, Post Processing

I’m Gene (or what's left of him), 63, but most people have known me on the web as “Goofup” for many years. NEM (Tom) started calling me “The Doctor” or “Doc” a while back, and it kinda stuck when I moved here.
I’ve been involved with photography since I was knee-high to a tripod- my father was a lithographer by trade. Started taking photos in my teens. Shot everything, from 110, 35, 120, slides, you name it. Did my own film processing while in the service. Took a photography class in college, and jumped to digital full time shortly after they came out. I’m mostly self-taught, and got into the post processing aspect of it many years ago. I don’t consider myself an “expert” at anything, but over the years have gained quite a bit of general knowledge and experience- mostly by learning from my own mistakes. My forte, though, is teaching and I love working with the beginners here.
I currently live in central Oklahoma with Bobbye, 4 cats (three are Persian and one alley cat) and 2 dogs (both American Eskimo). My current full time job is as an insurance agent, and I don’t get out to shoot near as much as I’d like.
4 years in the Air Force, 30 years of playing in a band, Eagle Scout, born and raised in Missouri, lived the last 40 years in Oklahoma, worked in a paint store, truck leasing, software help desk, and took web design at a tech school. (Oh, and I’m a deadly shot with rubber bands- just ask the cats.)

Ah...life is good when you have a camera in hand just when the perfect shot comes along and click....you got it!

I was born in 1956 and spent most of my growing years in an Eastern Ontario town in Canada called Smiths Falls. I've been taking pictures for most of my life starting when I was 7 years old. My Dad, being a photojournalist and head editor of our local, weekly newspaper, thought it would be grand to offer up a nice Twin Lens Reflex camera to his third child. Since the camera was nearly as big as I was he would get great delight is seeing this tiny 7 year old stand on anything possible in order to get high enough to take a shot of anything above the knees.

I was bitten by the bug and it never left! I entered the world of digital SLR's in 2007 with the purchase of a Nikon D40X. Since then I have added a Nikon D5000. Digital is a blast.
I love all kinds of photography and appreciate and encourage other's to be experimental. Its the best way to learn. Learn the rules well and then break the ones that work.

I now reside with my husband of 4 years, Hollis Morgan, in a lovely country home in Constance Bay, Ontario Canada. We are nestled in a small community that has a lovely woodland full of trails and is settled along the Ottawa River across from the beautiful Gatineau Hills.
We own a recording studio,
www.constantsoundstudio.com , that keeps us very, very busy. We are both trained audio engineers and I am the photographer/graphic designer for our company. We are also both accomplished musicians, singer songwriters who perform around Canada and U.S.
www.kateandhollis.com .
We have two cats... Spliff and Doobie... now stop laughing!

Joining NEM's has and still is the highlight of each day for me. You will love it here if you love your craft and love to share and learn from others. I look forward to meeting you all and seeing your creations!

I remember many years ago waiting for the pictures to emerge in the developing trays of my fathers dark room. It was always an adventure and I can still remember the smell of the chemicals. It was like magic to me, how images were produced. I suppose that my father was a bit of a techy in his day, always messing with cameras, 110 & 35mm, slides, old cine cameras and also Super 8 when it emerged.
I didn’t really get into photography until much later when the digital age had really taken hold. I don’t think I could have afforded to learn photography without the ability to delete and shoot again. In fact, waiting days for my prints to be developed was a nightmare, I just don’t have the patience,,,LOL.
I own and use a Sony Alpha 100 DSLR with a whole host of lenses and goodies which have been collected over the last 6 years. I use Adobe CS5 for post editing with a number of plug-ins. I like to experiment and try new methods of pocessing whilst maintaining that a good image is first and foremost captured in camera!
I have published a photobook, which can be found here………(working on #2)

Top Tip – This is an amazing website with an unbelievable wealth of skills and experience ready to be mined!!!! It’s free, if you are into photography and want to learn or post your work, then use it,,,,,,,,,,,,Participate!

I had a close friend in high school, way back in the late 60's, that was into photography and worked on the school newspaper and year book. I was fascinated by his work and tagged along on many of his projects, but I never really got into it myself because I hated the smell of the dark room and the delay of having film developed. He went on to became a commercial photographer, and I became an engineer. I've spent 30+ years in the electronics business designing IC's for telephone and computer systems.
When digital cameras started to appear I just had to have one, and I fell in love with the whole concept of mixing a camera and a computer and a printer, with no chemicals and no delay. A year ago I changed jobs and became a 'part time' engineer, giving me more time to learn and explore photography. At this point it is still a hobby (ie it could never pay the bills) but one that I spend more and more time pursueing. At some point I'd like to make this my 'retirement' job, but not quite there just yet. (The current economic crisis isn't making that any easier either.)
I started off doing landscape and close up photography of flowers, but that has gradually changed over to mostly people pictures. I have a small studio that I use for portrait work and some catalog work, plus it gives me a place to store all my photography 'stuff'. All of my current equipment is Canon. My favorite lens is the Canon 85mm/f1.2. It makes wonderfully sharp portraits and lets me experiment with low light photography without a flash.
More of my work can be seen on my web site at

Easypickings - Renee Brussaard
Moderator:Art Room
Hello! My name is Renee though I'm better known around here as Easy or Easypickings. I'm the co-mod over at the Art Room along with KateMorgan, and hope that you will all join us in
some challenges - both to your photography skills and post processing skills.
I am originally from Toronto ON (and the surrounding area) although I've lived in the Netherlands and am currently residing in Midland, Ontario with another NEM mod and my partner, Jackel, as well as our Shepherd/Lab mix, Java and 4 cats - Seb, Indira, Maya and Midgie. I work full-time as a police dispatcher, and am currently attempting to try my hand at car photography and other vehicles on the side.
I first became interested in photography in high school, joining the camera club and receiving an old Ricoh as a gift from my parents. I learned a bit about developing then too. Years later I got my first point and shoot camera - a Kodak easyshare from my ex and fell in love with taking photos all over again. About 4 or 5 years ago, I purchased a Nikon D70s with a couple of Nikor lenses and one Sigma 10-20mm lens and am currently shooting with a Nikon D90.
Living in the Midland area, one of the most pretty spots in Ontario, I have developed an interest in landscape and rural photography. I also enjoy architecture shooting. My love and passion is HDR and other post processing techniques. To me, it's a way to express my creativity and lift my photos from just photos to art.
I delve a little bit into portraiture and was the feature photographer at the Coldwater Art Gallery in December last year, showing with reknown portrait painter, Cyril Leeper. I am also currently working on a few projects that will feature HDR art - including a charity calendar for work. I've had a photo published in the Hamilton Spectator and a couple featured in a Snowmobile Magazine. I'm looking at expanding these coups into a side business in the coming year.

Hello my name is John. I’m pleased to be the moderator of the Transport and Machinery Forum. I live in the UK and own a small hotel in Blackpool.
I’ve been taking photographs, on and off, for over fifty years but just like everyone else I’m still learning.
During my lifetime I have been interested in many forms of transport. From an early age I was fascinated by the Steam Engines on British Railways, before turning my passion to Motor Cycle road racing in the late sixties. By the seventies Drag Racing had become my addiction. To fund these various activities I worked as a Quality Control Engineer in the Aerospace Industry, which in turn lead to my interest in aircraft. Consequently I know a little about most things but I’m not an expert on anything.
I hope you enjoy your time here and learn as much as I have done in the past fifteen months but above all have fun.

Canon_Bob - Bob Blanchard
Moderator: Bird Forum
Occupation: Systems Architect and Semi-Pro Photographer

Hi all!
I'm definitely from the "old school" of photography. My first "serious" camera was a Kodak Retina Reflex III 35mm. This old manual camera taught me fundamentals of photography that still apply to this very day. I then graduated to the Canon A-1 and F-1 (fd series) cameras....and spent about 20 years there! I was one of the last film hold outs - LOL. I finally drank the digital Kool-Aid in 2006 and converted to digital. Until that point, I had never even owned an auto focus camera! Now, I'd never go back! I still have all my old film gear, but it's proudly on display in my office. Today, I still shoot Canon gear. My post processing is done in Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Lightroom 2.
My photographic interests have crossed several genres over the years. Everything from night cityscapes, to special effects, to landscapes, and most recently to wildlife (mostly birds). Living here in Southwest Florida gives me the advantage of having some of the best bird photography in the world right out my back door! When I started photographing birds a few years ago, I had no real idea what I was doing, but with the coaching of some exceptional local photographers...I got a feel for it in no time. I'm known for my M.O. around here..."face down in the mud". I always try to "work" my images into more than just pictures. It's not unusual to find me lying in the mud, or chest deep in water with $20,000.00 of camera gear! I try to create art from avian imagery. I love teaching others, and regularly act as a guide for visiting photographers in SW Florida.
My Avian imagery is now sold through several stock photo agencies, and has won several National level awards. My images can be seen regularly in magazines, books, World Wide Web, advertising, calendars, textbooks, fine art, and even tattoos (long story - most bizarre sale I've ever had)!
