I think you have a nice portrait here- he looks a lot like a butcher- which may have been close to truth

Not "butcher" in a pejorative sense but what is now 'meat cutter' - years ago my dad was a "butcher" though he did not slaughter the animals.

JohnF and LincolnB: I think you are both right.  Back in the early days of surgery those guys probably did a fair amount of meat-cutting and stitching.  Wink
