Hello, all.  I have been spending more time in the digital darkroom recently.

Which brings up a question - what is the average amount of time you spend processing an image before posting it here on the forum?

A simple numerical answer will suffice - (will assume minutes and not hours) Tongue

But please feel free to elaborate.

2 mins....if that.
Being a beginner with Dslr, i'm TRYING to get to grips with my camera first (posting my pics as they are taken, lets me understand where I can improve technically from feedback/tips off you guys) but after seeing what CAN be done in PP, i'm sure it's something i'll be using more & more in the future.

I'd say approx 20 mins plus/minus on an image, depending on what I'm doing to it.

10-15 mins for a straight shot. If it needs layers and such, it could be considerable longer.

I'm going with this time frame also...   but ya ya know , even in the daze of wet Darkrooms, I enjoy EQUALLY time spent shooting and processing... and still do today!!

Naturally the Shot being right is a given,,, but also enjoy the finishing touches for presentation...

It depends on what I plan on doing.  If its an HDR shot I might spend 15 minutes but no longer.  If I don't know what I want to do to an image and just want to experiment I might spend 30 minutes just playing around and having fun.

Probably 10-15 per image (if my 'puter is running fast).
It really depends on the image and the deliverable effect I want.

Interesting question

Sometimes I can process things in two minutes, ask Patrish about this one. Smiley

I would estimate 15-20 minutes on average for my shots.  However, if there is something specific I'm going for, I can spend 3+ hours on a picture easily.  It all depends on the goal I have for each individual picture.

Sympl has put a good point in highlight here. In my case some images are SOOC some demand twice the time, coz of both facts I'm beginner with phototaking and with photoeditting. practice does it's bit, then the knowledge about your software plus the depth the software has in terms of correcting an image. My main problem is rather the managing of the amount of pics the digital era brings.

Interesting thread.  I have no clear answer myself.

Some take 20 seconds.
Some take 20 minutes.
Some take 20 seconds and then I mess with it for 20 minutes.
Some take 20 minutes of messing and I should've left it alone after 20 seconds.

It depends.

Hey, thanks everyone for taking time to answer - appreciate it.

Seems the average time is fifteen minutes MOL depending on what is involved.

NoW there is Gord's thought provoking answer - if I paraphrase, "It's done when it's done".  Unfortunately, his answer numerically was one of the biggest ones I was after.  Guess I wanted to know if he spent a lot of time creating an image so I would have a "compared to what".  "Geez, I must be rushing, Gord takes an average of two and half hours!" Tongue

Like Patrish said, "If I am done in five minutes, what am I missing?" Same goes if I have spent 30 minutes - "Am I there yet?"

Guess part of what prompted me to post the question is that I don't post anything that I don't think I am done with.  Even if I rush through it, when I click on "Post" I think I am done.
And then, thanks to all you folks, the things I have overlooked are brought to my attention.  And then I slap my forehead and think "gosh durn it, I should have seen that."

It has been a great month for me on the forum.  I have garnered "excellence", "terrific" and my first nomination for POTM.  BUT none of those on the first attempt when I really thought I was done Sad

So now, how do I learn what to look for.  If I don't know and I spend twice as long on an image, I don't think I am going to see it.

When I posed the question about what goes through your mind when you look through the viewfinder, Gord gave us three items but alluded to ten.  Is it the same in the digital darkroom - is there some sort of checklist so you know when you are "done"?

Michelangelo said his sculptures were already in the block of marble, all he had to do was remove the excess.  How did he know when David had fully emerged?

For me, it is a real conundrum that you must view subjective material objectively to be sure you are "done".

Guess that conundrum adds a couple more rungs to Tom's ladder.

And speaking of Tom, thanks for lending me your soapbox. Grin

I'm DONE (or at least I think I am) Tongue

Greg shared that he spends from one minute to several hours.  If the latter, it is because he started over, maybe several times.

Along the same line as Gord....  I could go back to some of my images from  five years ago that I was Happy with.....  look at them today and think Hmmmmmmmmm......  Why ??  Because each Month , Day and Year we Learn More about processing as well as shooting..

I'm always amazed at work I have published, when I reflect back on one of those images, I now think , what could have,  or should have been better...   at the Time however , I figured it couldn't be beat lol...   A photo Editor buys out of Need, Timing,  and sometimes out of his or her personal taste lol...  The thing is , they put their pants on like You, and Me, there opinion like everyone else's on Art and Critique is just that, their opinion... so it all boils down to Pleasing yourself....   If theirs something to Learn ---> LEARN... and that can call for a rework lol...

Common Ground might be 15 or 20 Minutes, but again, as Gord  said , It Ain't Done till its Done...    Meaning for me , it might look done today , but tomorrow , next week , or next month, I'm looking with new Eyes!
