In 1970 there were still occasions when there long gaps between customers at Ross Services petrol station and the attendants could be often seen at the door of their office looking somewhat bored:

One could do the crossword of course (whilst keeping a lookout for the boss!):

Or one could practise acting the part of clown!

The oil cupboard was an important part of the role of a petrol attendant as quite a few cars used nearly as much oil as petrol (lol) as evidenced by the clouds of oily smoke which followed them. It was possible to earn a lot of commission selling oil and some unscrupulous employees were sometimes known to be a little generous when checking an engine's oil level!

Those were the days Mike, five gallons of petrol and two quarts of oil. Smiley

Too right John. My first car was an old 100E Ford Anglia which only had three forward gears...cost me two weeks wages, £30. I wrapped it round a belisha beacon on the way home from a night out with Peter Shilton (who was training with Gordon Banks...Leicester Goalkeeper)!
